If you’re looking for a quick and simple fall decor DIY, this one might be just what you need. These painted planters are easy to customise. Also, I love how they turned out with the leaf pattern and warm autumn colours. You can use them to hold candles, pine cones, or anything else that feels cosy and seasonal.
What You’ll Need
- White paint
- Autumnal coloured paint (like red, yellow or orange)
- Black paint
- Pots (I used ones that are about 5 cm in diameter)
- A biggish paint brush
- A fine paint brush
- Things to fill the pots with
Steps
1. Starting with a White Base
For this project, I started by painting a white layer over a couple of planters using the biggish brush. You don’t have to do this step, but I like how it gives a cleaner surface to work on—especially if your final colours are on the lighter side and the dark of the pot shines through.

2. Adding Colour
Once that dried, I went in with the main colours (still using the bigger brush). I used a few layers of red on one pot and yellow on the other. You might need more than one coat, depending on your paint, but I just kept layering until I was happy with how solid the colours looked.

3. Drawing the Leaf Pattern
Next came the fun part. I drew on a leaf pattern by hand using a pencil. Don’t worry if you make a mistake. You can always go over it again with another layer of paint to cover up the mistake.

I’ll add some pictures here too in case you want a few other leaf design ideas to try. There are so many different directions you can go with it!

4. Painting the Leaves
Now to the painting part of the project.
Use a fine brush to paint the leaves using your pencil drawings as guide. The finer your brush, the easier it will be.

5. Time to Fill Them
In the end, I filled one of the pots with a candle and the other with some pine cones. But you can definitely be creative and switch things up. I think these would also look really cute filled with sweets or some other small thing you have lying around the house.
Of course, you don’t have to use small pots like I did. You can also use bigger ones. You can then either make the leaves bigger or paint more, it’s up to you.

That’s it for this fall decor DIY. It’s a super simple project, but I really like how warm and inviting the final result feels. You can definitely play around with the colours and designs to make it your own. Whether you fill them with candles, acorns, or something completely different. They’re such a fun way to bring a bit of autumn into your space.
