DIY Crochet Leaf Jar Cozy

I made this jar the other day, and I really like how it turned out. It’s a mix of different textures and colours that just feel like fall. You don’t need a lot of materials, and the whole project comes together pretty quickly.

You can use this jar as a candle holder with a tea light candle, or you can keep it on your desk as a little storage jar.

What You’ll Need

  • A small glass jar
  • Corrugated brown craft paper (the ribbed textured paper)
  • Crochet thread or yarn in the colour of your choice (I used 4-ply orange and yellow cotton thread)
  • Crochet hook (I used a 4 mm one)
  • Lace ribbon
  • Hot glue gun
  • Scissors

Steps

1. Wrapping the Jar

Cut a strip of the corrugated paper so it fits around the middle of your jar. I used my hot glue gun to attach it.

2. Crocheting the Leaves

The leaves are my favourite part of this project. They’re really simple once you get the hang of the stitch.

First, chain 8.

Push your hook through the second chain from the hook, yarn over and pull through, but leave the loop on your hook.

Do the same in the next chain, and keep going until you have 7 loops on your hook.

Yarn over, pull through 2 loops, yarn over again and pull through 2, and keep going until you only have 1 loop left.

Chain 1 and flip your work upside down.

Now repeat the same process on the other side of the chain. Start in the second stitch from the hook and keep adding loops until you have 7 again.

Yarn over, pull through 2, keep repeating until 1 loop is left.

Finish off and leave the starting tail long.

That starting tail is what I used to glue the leaf to the jar, so don’t work it back into the stitches. Make three leaves in different colours for a nice layered effect.

3. Putting It Together

Once the leaves were done, I glued them to the front of the jar, overlapping them a little.

Then, I wrapped the tail-ends of the leaves around the jar and affixed it with my glue gun.

4. Adding the Lace

Next, I took a piece of lace ribbon and glued it around the top rim of the jar. It softens the look and makes the jar feel a little more finished.

Conclusion

And that’s it! The jar is done. You can pop in a tea light candle and it gives off a really cozy glow, or you can just use it as a little storage jar. It’s simple, inexpensive, and a fun way to use up small bits of yarn.

If I make a few more, I think I’ll try different colour combinations and maybe group them together on a shelf or table. They’d also make a sweet handmade gift.

✨ Tip: Try making the leaves in darker colours like burgundy or even deep green to change up the look while still keeping the autumn vibe.
